Adrian,
Take a look at Tools/Options, Other Page. Then if you have a Reading Pane
button, click on it to see if there's a checkbox that helps to resolve that
behavior.
I have Outlook 2007 so not sure how consistent are the options as compared to
2003.

I'm using Outlook 2003. Sometimes if I arrow past several unread messages and
reopen the folder later, those messages are no longer marked unread. Could that
be your experience? I don't find Outlook nearly as consistent or reliable in
this regard as Outlook Express which I used until recently.
Before doing a repair, as someone else suggested and which I'd hate to do
myself, could you have someone with sight look at your screen and make sure
Outlook is reporting "unread," regardless of whether JAWS is reading that icon
to you? If you aren't noticing other JAWS-reading problems, you'd think this is
an isolated problem requiring a specific solution.
