I am guessing that if you go to "View" on the menu bar, arrow down to
"Current view and press enter or right arrow", arrow down to "group messages
by conversation" and you will find that you have this checked.

If you press enter, it will uncheck it.  Go back to your mail boxes and I'll
bet you will then be able to see the unread messages.  You can then do
exactly the same steps to reset the "group messages by conversation" after
you have read or deleted the spectral messages!

I don't know why OE does this with the occasional message, I get 400-500
emails per day and this only happens once in every few months with my OE and
I haven't figured out why...
