I tried your strategy of typing several characters and then hitting enter in
a reply to an e-mail, and still no luck. ... It seems that my PC cursor is
fixed at the point where I last typed, and I can't get Jaws to say anything
as I move up and down in the reply text box with my arrow keys.
I can do a Control up arrow, and read a bit of the text, but still can't
edit anything once it is written.

Regarding the first question, I have done it in the beginning of my use
of Thunderbird several years ago and can't remember exactly how I have
done it, but try to sweetch off "detect language" in the jaws verbosety
menu when pressing ins plus v.
For the second question, after some experience I realised that when
press control plus r to reply, you should type in several character or a
word and press enter, then you will be able to use PC-cursor as you
normaly use it, because you get the control over the editing cursor.
