NVDA is free. The latest release is the first IMO that is actually usable, even if it's not real polished yet. I suspect that within a couple years it will be giving jaws etc major competition. I also doubt that I'll be sending freedom scientific any more money (I'm paid through version 12). You can get operating systems that are not as expensive as windows, but honestly compared to the cost of the computer itself the OS is trivial (there generally is no reason to upgrade existing systems). However windows is extremely well supported, unlike many of the alternatives. If you are comfortable with steep learning curves you can go the Linux route, though accessibility is still pretty poor.
