Word documents that won't read in wordpad

hi listers:
i'm using windows 98 se, and JAWS 5.0, I recently recieved my textbooks for
college, 2 of which are on cd rom. The first book reads well, but the second
book, when I go to open the files it says, wordpad dialog this program has
performed an illegal opporation and will be shut down, if the problem
persists, contact the program vender. what's going on here, it only happens
with certain word documents. BtW, the other book is also in word format.
