This isn't true. The downloadable file will work on all flavours of
XP except, perhaps, the 64 Bit edition.
What microsoft means when they say
This installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers
downloading and installing on multiple computers on a network. If you're
updating
just one computer, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/protect.
is that you can wait and get a smaller download from Windows Update.
If you don't want to wait, or if you want to burn the package to CD and
install on a few systems, you can use the larger file at
http://tinyurl.com/5bobl
to get the pack now or to burn to CD and install on several systems.
