Shift key doesn't highlight

Hi all,
A couple of friends of mine have bought a new computer. One of them is a
laptop, the other is a desktop, but both have the same problem, the shift
key doesn't highlight text when necessary unless you download JFW. Insert +
3 doesn't help either, can you help them with an easy solution?
