You can use the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" in the Accessories section of the 
Start menu to scan.

  I'm not sure whether Open Book can scan pictures or not, but if you can 
figure out how to use it, the software that came with your scanner is probably 
good for pictures.  That's how I scan pictures and send them.
