Hi, Chip.

Your points are well taken, but I wouldn't discourage prospective purchasers from checking with FS for video card issues. I had to return a Dell laptop once because the conflict couldn't be resolved, and since then FS has saved me needless annoyance and wasted time by advising me on what they know works and what might not. As I suggested in my original message on this subject, a check through the FS website technical service bulletins should be followed up with a call to tech support.

External number pads are very cheap; if one doesn't work, just return it and/or buy another. I believe that they usually work.

The advice on video card compatibility I've found to be unhelpful. FS will often say a certain video card is not compatible, and we've found in the past many of us on the list are using it quite happily.

FS never seems to be very helpful when it comes to video cards.

More than one person I know solved their jfw video problem by having a sighted person check in the device manager, under video devices, and they found multiple video output devices. When they disable all of them except the primary one, jfw began to work.

This seems to be more of an issue with laptops for some reason.

Hi, To all and thanks to Chip, but I am finding an issueto consider when buying a laptop. I have looked at a number of laptops.

I am finding from word of mouth that one cannot assume that using an external numpad will work with JAWS or with MAGIC.

That is because sighted folks to whom most external numpads are sold to not use the combination of Insert keys (for JAWS) or the numpad + or -combinations (for MAGIC). Hence the reliability of numpad usage for our needs is iffy.

Do you know of any numpad that works with Toshiba, or SONY or Dell or does one have to buy proprietary external numpads?

Thanks in advance.

The only one I can think of is what OS it comes with? If it's media edition or professional edition, you'll have to pay for the professional edition of JFW (a *completely* unnecessary fee on the part of FS, and not one charged by other competators).

You may want to insure you buy 1gb of RAM if you're going to use a software speech synthesizer. There's very little else I can think of that matters to JFW.
