Very strange, and I have JAWS 9 on this machine. Using Word 2007 and it does 
not skip document numbers. It correctly assigns 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
but I would attribute this to MS-word and not to JAWS.

Do you have Word set up to open new documents as separate instances of Word, 
or for each to be part of the one instance? Perhaps that is something to 
consider.

In any case, is it merely a curiosity, or does it cause a problem? I usually 
just assign a name to any new document I create.

Since we are now up to JAWS 11 I would personally just let it ride.
