MS Security Essentials Setting

Hi all,
Can someone tell me the implication of the following setting in MSE when it
is checked:
"Start scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use"
Does "not in use" mean closing all running applications and wait until the
scheduled scan is finished. And how will I know that this is the case?
On the other hand, if this setting is unchecked, can the scheduled scan
still take place automatically while I launch and work on applications at
the same time?
