I agree with both of you to a point. I believe that all the Jaws editions
start with the $1295 edition and that the authorization key determines which
functions are disabled, otherwise they are identical. I don't see any way
to determine whether it's Standard or Pro except that: if under About Jaws
it says "Remote access enabled", that means that it is the $1295 edition,
They are all the same version number. I don't doubt that there are
differences that are necessary for compatibility with the various XP
editions, but nothing that the average would notice.
In my conversation with FS today they said that the Standard edition is being phased out. I think that they inferred that there will be only edition. I assume that this might be the end of the $895 price. What the new price will be is anyone's guess.
Judith's problem still remains. If what FS says is true (and I think it
probably is), and if she is running XP Pro with Jaws Standard she will have
to upgrade to Jaws Pro. She should, of course, get some authoritative
advice before spending a minimum of $200 plus tax.

Hi folks, From all I know JAWS standard and JAWS Pro are the same programs. I do not think I have ever seen anything which explains the differences. Perhaps, in earlier days, XP Pro was used primarily by businesses and FS figured they could afford to pay a little more for the authorization? I certainly don't consider myself an authority on this matter but it
seems that what this tech said is definitely in conflict with what Freedom
Scientific is saying. Jaws Standard definitely does not need XP Pro. FS
says that Jaws Standard only works with XP Home. If it worked with XP
Pro or Media Center there would be no reason to upgrade to Jaws Pro.
FS says that Jaws Pro works with all editions of XP.
Because you said that you were using XP Pro with Jaws Standard it made me question whether I had upgraded to Jaws Pro unnecessarily. I just called FS and confirmed that the tech is incorrect. They said that Jaws Standard will not work properly with XP Pro.
It may be that the problems you are having are unrelated to the mismatched programs but I think it would be wise to discuss this with FS.

Someone that was having difficulty with their new computer mentioned that
they were running Windows XP Pro and Jaws Standard. Someone else has already mentioned that this may be the cause of the problem. I can't confirm that but I would't be surprised if that was the case.
In the past week I purchased a new laptop that is running Windows Media Center Edition (Windows Home was not an option).
Freedom Scientific, on their website, lists Jaws Standard as being compatible only with XP Home Edition. If this is not true then I believe
that their sales department would have advised me that I had the option of not upgrading, rather than upgrading to Jaws Pro at a cost of $368 ($200 upgrade plus $200 for the SMA minus $60 refund for 1 unused version
upgrade plus sales tax.
As I understand it, XP Media Center is based on Pro with certain functions disabled and with other functions added.
Can anyone elaborate on this?
