I have enough vision to see that when the computer boots up the first screen
says "Windows XP". None of this is making much sense. Jaws is working
perfectly except when I lose text or emails in the middle of writing them.
I have a feeling that this might have something to do with that problem and
I can't afford to buy jaws pro or get another computer. I guess I'm stuck,
I just hope the teck can make good on this deal. Judith

Judith,
When you go to JAWS and then to the help menu then to the "about" item what
does it say you are running?

The last time I booted up I checked the first screen and it said "Windows XP
pro". I sent my teck, the one who sold me this and knows jaws, what the
feedback has been on this topic. If nothing out of the ordinary was
happening I wouldn't care but disappearing documents and emails is enough to
make me concerned.

price. Not to sound silly, Judith, but could it possibly be that your computer is running under XP Home, which I can't see why that wouldn't be quite adequate if you'll pardon the backward syntax, and you just don't know it? You don't seem to understand why nearly everyone is perplexed that you claim to be using Jaws standard with an operating system it's supposed to simply not work with at *all*. That doesn't mean, work better or worse. That isn't what it's about. It's not that Jaws could work better this way or that. It's purely binary, if you will ; It shouldn't work at all as a fully functional, running program.
Ack. This is too weird. I hope we find out what this was about. I'm sorry that you keep thinking, My goodness, I'm having these terrible problems and these guys, they keep going on about which version it is or something.
but, well, as I said. it's quite a mystery and we can't help but be fascinated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Bron" <jbron@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 1:06 PM Subject: Re: Jaws editions and Windows XP editions
Carl, I got this version of Jaws from the commission for the blind and they don't buy pro editions of anything. Also, on this new computer jaws works better than it did on my win 98 machine Except for my disappearing documents and emails. I sent one of the posts from this list over to my teck but, as could have been predicted, he hasn't answered yet. Hello Judith,
I am glad your system is working but I am curious how you know your JAWS is standard. I can't imagine how it would work on an XP pro system if it is. One way to be sure is to go to www.fsactivate.com, press the continue button and select the link to verify the number of keys available. Enter your serial number, hit submit and the resulting table will tell you for sure. Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, I don't know who is right or wrong but except for the mystery of my disappearing documents or emails jaws regular is running fine on my xp pro machine. I forwarded a post from this list to my teck to see if he would adjust my settings so that I could hang on to my documents. I'm not debating right or wrong on this, I can't afford to upgrade to jaws pro. So, for now let him make his adjustments so I can keep my documents. I stand corrected. You and Cy are correct. Judith Bron, in an earlier post, thought she was running XP Pro and Jaws Standard. This indicates that she must be mistaken about on or the other.

That is absolutely correct, unless FS has changed the game in the last two weeks.

Cy and Alex,
I agree with both of you to a point. I believe that all the Jaws editions start with the $1295 edition and that the authorization key determines which functions are disabled, otherwise they are identical. I don't see any way to determine whether it's Standard or Pro except that: if under About Jaws it says "Remote access enabled", that means that it is the $1295 edition, They are all the same version number. I don't doubt that there are differences that are necessary for compatibility with the various XP editions, but nothing that the average would notice.
In my conversation with FS today they said that the Standard edition is being phased out. I think that they inferred that there will be only edition. I assume that this might be the end of the $895plus tax. What the new price will be is anyone's guess.
Judith's problem still remains. If what FS says is true (and I
think it probably is), and if she is running XP Pro with Jaws
Standard she will have to upgrade to Jaws Pro. She should, of
course, get some authoritative advice before spending a minimum of $200unnecessarily.
