I think we got software synthesizers in the 1996 to 1998 time frame, which
was great because for many of us we could get rid of the head aches of
hiring techs to
speech soundcards taken out of our old computers and put in our new
computers so we could
have speech. it was so neat when you could finally, as today, buy about any
computer and bring it home and have it working within 15 minutes after you
install jaws.
I started with jaws for dos in 1990 and it was on two disks. my first
computer supplied by VR in Indiana was a Toshiba and had a 20 MB hard drive
and it enabled me to keep on with work.
the computer had a floppy, no CD. speach was through an accent external
sound speaker.
Still had an authorization key disk which could be a problem as much as it
worked.
but in 1994, JFW(jaws for windows, the new name for jaws) came out and now
we blind folks could multi task as long as
we could keep jfw stable. but it overall worked pretty good and kept a lot
of us in our jobs and created many new opportunities for unemployed people
who are blind. getting the capability to work in windows finally was the
first big break through for us. the efforts of the blindness organizations
and others kept the pressure on MS and others in computer technology to make
computers, hardware, web sites and software accessable.
