Good morning Tom,

Thanks for the excellent explaination of how one could use safeguards to prevent applications from working over an external IP network.

I wonder what result there would be if one attempted to run TD over the Internet using a secure VPN.

Thanks again,
Everett

There are some key differences between Tandem over the Internet (TI) and
Tandem Direct (TD). TD requires no access the Tandem Center, and is thus
more secure since no connectivity data need be sent over the Internet.
Normally, this center acts as a go-between between two PCs. It generates
meeting IDs and provides a path between two JAWS computers. In TD, since
the connection is DIRECT, the controller user (not the Tandem Center) must
create a meeting id and supply it to the target user. Also, TD uses a
different port number (3000) to connect to the target than TI (12000). You
don't need Internet access to use TD, so long as there is some sort of IP
connectivity available between the controller and target machines, which is
typically provided by a local area network connection if not an Internet
connection.

I'm not sure however, if TD restricts IP level communications in some way.
This could be done in several ways:
* FS could limit the number of IP packet hops between controller and target
to 1 or 2,
* They could prevent communication between computers that do not share the
same IP address segment,
* or they could stop communications by forcing time-outs if packets take
longer than they would on local area networks.

Such restrictions are entirely possible as a means of distinguishing TD from
TI, and making sure that TD only works on local area networks.

Go listen to the FS podcast that covers it. It specificaly stated that
direct was for local area networks only.

Good afternoon,

Having not read anything about Tandum I don't assume that I actually know
anything about the difference between Centre and Direct modes. However, in
no way whatsoever does the term "Direct" imply a local area network. What
it implies is a "Direct" connection between two computers.

I would assume that if "Direct" mode was called "Local" mode that it would
imply a local IP network.

I really don't understand how what works between two computers on an
internal IP network would not work over an external IP network, with the
exception of routing and firewall rules getting in the way.

HTH,
Everett

As suggested, Direct is supposed to work over a local area network only,
hence the word direct.

Is it possible to use direct over the Internet?

Thanks,

Tandom Direct is to access a Tandom session through a local area
network. Do not use this option unless your authorization has Tandom
Direct enabled. Tandom Centre is the option to do a Tandom session over
the internet and is a separate subscription, or it will be when they
roll it out. Hope this helps.

Good morning everyone. I currently have Jaws 10 on my computer. When it
comes to doing a tandem session, does it matter if you do it through
the
center sub menu or the direct submenu? Both menus are the same apart
from
the fact that the get access to a computer option is unavailable in the
direct sub menu. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.
