Go listen to the FS podcast that covers it.  It specificaly stated that 
direct was for local area networks only.

Having not read anything about Tandum I don't assume that I actually know
anything about the difference between Centre and Direct modes.  However, in
no way whatsoever does the term "Direct" imply a local area network.  What
it implies is a "Direct" connection between two computers.

I would assume that if "Direct" mode was called "Local" mode that it would
imply a local IP network.

I really don't understand how what works between two computers on an
internal IP network would not work over an external IP network, with the
exception of routing and firewall rules getting in the way.
