Karl,If you read the blog entry linked to in the messages posted to this list, you will see that the lawsuit is over a patent issue. FS is saying that GW Micro infringed on their PlaceMarker patent. According to the patent, when you use the JAWS PlaceMarker feature, the JAWS program counts the number of HTML tags on a web page down to the string of text that you marked. Then when you call up this PlaceMarker again, the program retrieves this information to find your PlaceMarker. If you've ever used this feature on a page that changed after you set a PlaceMarker, you know that their technique fails in this case. GW Micro's technique for locating a PlaceMarker is different since it doesn't fail when the page changes. Since they use a different method, it's hard to see how GW Micro is infringing on the FS patent.
I think that FS would like to slow down the development of Window-Eyes. They hear footsteps behind them, and instead of running faster to keep ahead, they want to beat their competition over the head with a club. I had hoped that the increased competition of GW Micro would encourage FS to make a better product, but again they would rather spend their resources trying to crush their competitors in court.

I surely don't know the entire story behind this news but I do know that FS and others certainly have to pay licensing fees for the products they use from Microsoft and even the Braille translator in JAWS. This may be something like that or it may not. Remember that the only news we have heard is from GW Micro who, like it or not, is far behind in the screen reading market. I don't say this to trash the product as I think it is agood product written by smart and caring people but the facts are the facts.Karl ____________________ Karl Smith Access Technology Specialist Axis 4304 South El Camino St. Taylorsville, Utah 84119 Phone: 866-824-7885 Fax: 866-824-7885 E-mail: karl@xxxxxxxxxxxx Life is one dumb thing after another....Love is two dumb things after each other. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of john.falter Sent: Thursday, July 24, 2008 12:57 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Freedom Suing GW Micro In software and manufacturing, many techniques are patented. It looks to me like blind users are the obvious losers here, if as is claimed, capabilities of a screen reader can be patented so that no other products to aid blind users can make use of them. Absolutely, unbelievable, and what a loss for us all.-----Original Message----- From: gw-news@xxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:gw-news@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, July 24, 2008 12:42 PM To: gw-news@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Freedom Suing GW Micro Doug recently posted a very interesting blog entry that you should read: http://www.gwmicro.com/blog/index.php/all/2008/07/24/do_compan ies_really_compete_on_who_has_t Aaron -- To insure that you receive proper support, please include all past correspondence (where applicable), and any relevant information pertinent to your situation when submitting a problem report to the GW Micro Technical Support Team.
