Julian,

Speech synthesis is very subjective. What some people like, others hate. I've always liked original DECtalk speech, which is why I like DECtalk Express and DECtalk Access32 software speech. The differences between speech produced by DECtalk Express and DECtalk Access32 software are mainly due to the differences in the audio produced by the Express and that produced by a sound card. Both the DECtalk Express and DECtalk Access32 software synthesizers use the same speech rules. For example, both make the mistake of saying Czechoslovakian for the country Czechoslovakia. Those of you using either of these synthesizers may think I typed the same thing twice, but check the spelling. Of course, this particular mistake is only relevant to those reading a history text these days.

If you look at the supported synthesizers in the Speech and Braille Manager, you'll see that there aren't that many choices. The only other USB external seems to be Triple Talk USB, and since I don't care much for Doubletalk speech, I doubt I would like it. And I don't like Keynote Gold speech either!

So, if I were buying a new computer, I would try to find one with a serial port for the DECtalk Express, or find a PCI card or a USB to serial converter that would provide a serial port. Unfortunately, not all USB to serial converters work with DECtalk Express, and it would be necessary to ask around to find out which ones do.

In your opinion, what is the best card, external, then internal for speech? has the best clearest voice? with the least problems, and easiest install?

in another card. I do have the dec express original, how do you think that compares to the dec access internal 32?

thanks

Julian

I too have a DECtalk USB. I only use it at times when I want to be able to raise the volume level without making the speech louder such as listening to a DVD. I use DECtalk Access32 most of the time for reading text.

Access Solutions may be using the DECtalk name, but they didn't get DECtalk speech to use with it. I had readers in college back in the 60's that I am reminded of every time I hear my DECtalk USB. How did I ever get that engineering degree?

Julian,

You'll see I've changed the subject line to be relevant.

I'm curious about the Dectalk Express you mention, but would you check the name? You wrote "UBS," but I think you mean "USB." Aside from that, I just Googled Dectalk Express and Fireball and came up with no results.

I bought a USB version of Dectalk Express two and a half years ago, and it's slower than the old version. I'm hoping you've found a later and better version.

Thanks.

Jim,

I haven't heard of that deck talk access card since about 15 years ago. Is that still around? internal I think?

Have you seen the ubs fireball 1200 deck express external? its a newer version of the old deck talk express, much faster though.

I think last I checked it was $500.

good luck

Julian
