Hi, Dave. I don't know about an analysis of internal differences between .jdf files in Jaws 9 and Jaws 11, but in Jaws11, there is another box which allows for case sensitivity which is not found in Jaws 9.

Gary,

Actually I have copied some over, and they work fine. Internally the only
difference between the JAWS 11 default.jdf file and any JAWS 9 jdf file is
that each pairing is extended as follows:

[turn on all punctuation to hear this correctly]

JAWS 11
.word1.new pronounced word1.*.*.*.0.0.

JAWS 9
.word1.new pronounced word1.

It would be fairly easy to edit an old dictionary by doing a search/replace
in MS-Word, replacing any .^p with .*.*.*.0.0.^p

I presume the new wildcards are related to the dictionary being able to give
different pronunciations for different synthesizers, languages, and voices
within synthesizers.

I stick to the default synth and English, so none of my wildcards are ever
affected.

However I see no difference in the modified JAWS 9 JDF files when edited in
the JAWS 11 Dictionary Manager, so really don't understand the underlying
mystery.

Dave

Well, if I really want the dictionaries badly enough, I copy them over by
hand. If their format was different though, that probably wouldn't work.

Hi, Gary. Probably like Dave, and maybe you, I put a lot of time and
effort into upgrading the JAWS dictionary. That's why I merge settings
from version to version. But I've also encountered that question at FS. Do
you keep your dictionary settings updated. If so, how do you handle it
when installing a new JAWS version?

Dave, I believe the Merge process to be a pretty much hit or miss affair.
That's why I never merge my settings after upgrading to a new version of
JFW. If I needed further convincing that Merge is not very reliable, the
first thing that JFW Tech Support always asked me when I reported a
problem with a new version of JFW was, "Did you merge your settings?"

Brian and Bill!

got it! In the Manage Applications dialog (JAWS/Options/Manage
Applications) I found that Outlook Express and a few other applications
were unchecked. I know I didn't uncheck these, and they are all checked in
JAWS 9.0. So for some mysterious reason they had been excluded when I
installed and merged JAWS 11.

After I made sure they were all checked, they work just fine.

I hope no one else suffers from this, but now this is one answer, at
least.

Have you checked in your configuration manager under "set options" then
under text processing to make sure your dictionaries are turned on for the
specific applications? Bill White billwhite92701@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Anyone else seen this? In older versions of JAWS I was able to have
separate JAWS pronunciation dictionaries for various applications, which
would be enabled with that application. For example in Outlook Express a
specific file Outlook Express.JDF would be loaded, and any specific
pronunciations would be active.

With JAWS 11 however, none of the application-specific dictionary files
are active. the only one that works is the DEFAULT.JDF file.

I can open an application-specific JDF file in the dictionary manager,
edit it and save it, but it does not get used. Just the default.

Yes, I did run the merge utility, and yes, the files are in my user
settings folder.

Is this something that was broken, or purposely changed in JAWS 11?

I can reload JAWS 9 and the dictionaries work fine. Load up JAWS 11 again
and they stop working.
