Freedom Scientific Accessibility Tips and Links http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/training_Adobe_Online_Resources.asp#skip PDF Files and JAWS http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/training_PDF_and_Adobe_Reader_7.asp Moving through Forms With the Virtual Cursor on, press CTRL+INSERT+HOME to move to the first form field. To move to the next form field, press F. To move to the previous form field, press SHIFT+F. To move to the last form field, press CTRL+INSERT+END. Press INSERT+F5 to get a list of form fields on a page. Select an item from this list and press ENTER to move to a specific field. JAWS automatically activates Forms Mode for the item, allowing to enter information or make a selection. You can also use the following Navigation Quick Keys to move to specific types of form controls on the page: list of 4 items • Press C to move to the next combo box. • Press E to move to the next edit box. • Press R to move to the next radio button. • Press X to move to the next check box. list end Hold down SHIFT before pressing a Navigation Quick Key to move to the previous form control of that type. In addition, if you hold down INSERT+CTRL and then press one of these keys, JAWS displays a list of all form controls of that type that are on the page. Select a form control from the list and press ENTER to move to it. TAB Order Authors of web pages can specify the TAB order for form controls by using the "Tabindex" HTML attribute. JAWS moves through the controls in this specified order when you press TAB or SHIFT+TAB to move through the form. If the "Tabindex" attribute is not assigned to all fields, JAWS first moves through the items with a "Tabindex" assigned, then moves through the other form fields and links in the order they appear on the page. Forms Mode To make changes to form controls, move the Virtual Cursor to a form control, and press ENTER to switch to Forms Mode. JAWS says, "Forms Mode On," the information and the name of the control. When you press ENTER to go into Forms Mode, the PC cursor is activated on the current control. If the control is an edit field, the cursor is placed at the top of the field. If the control is a check box, the state of the check box is toggled. If the control is a radio button that is not checked, it is checked. To navigate within an edit field while in Forms Mode, use the arrow keys as you normally would. To move to the next form field while in Forms Mode, press TAB. To move to the previous field, press SHIFT+TAB. Tip: If Forms Mode is on and you use the Say Line (INSERT+UP ARROW) or Say All (INSERT+DOWN ARROW) commands in an edit box, JAWS reads all the text on the current line. This may include text that is not inside the edit box, such as a label or description. To exit Forms Mode, press NUM PAD PLUS. If the Forms Mode Auto Off setting is enabled, then JAWS automatically exits Forms Mode when the page content is updated. This setting is enabled by default. Check Boxes and Radio Buttons To check a check box or radio button without entering Forms Mode, press SPACEBAR or NUM PAD SLASH when the Virtual Cursor is on the item. If you are on a checkbox, the state of the checkbox is toggled. If you are on a radio button that is unchecked, the radio button is checked. Combo Boxes If you enter Forms Mode in a Combo box, the first item is selected. To change the selection, press UP or DOWN ARROW. Tip: In some forms, changing the selection in a combo box opens a new page automatically. To work with these combo boxes, press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open the list of choices, Then move to an item and press ENTER to make your selection. Multiple Selection To make multiple selections in a list box, press TAB to move into the list box. Press SHIFT+F8 to move into Multi-Select mode. Use UP and DOWN ARROW to move through the list, and press SPACEBAR to make your selections. Press SHIFT+F8 again when you are finished. Form Control Prompts JAWS attempts to associate each form field with a textual prompt. JAWS can identify when a prompt is specifically associated with a control, and speaks the correct prompt when you move to that control. If no prompt is specifically associated with a control, JAWS attempts to identify text positioned near the control as the prompt. This is most accurate when the text is directly above or to the left of the form control. Label Element JAWS reads this label when you move to the associated form field. Fieldset and Legend Elements The "Fieldset" element is used to group form controls in the same way as a group box groups controls within a dialog box. The "Legend" element gives these groups of controls a name. JAWS reads the legend as you move to each form control within the "Fieldset" with TAB, SHIFT+TAB, or form control specific navigation commands such as F. If you do not wish to hear the "fieldset" legend information, disable it in Configuration Manager, Verbosity Options. Select the button for the verbosity level you are using. In the Speech Output Types list, move to the Control Group Name check box and press SPACEBAR to clear the check mark. Select Ok to accept your changes, select Ok again, then save the open configuration file to save your settings. For more information, refer to Verbosity Options. Authoring Considerations Some Forms are not written with accessibility in mind, and JAWS cannot obtain enough information to read the form controls properly. If JAWS does not read form controls correctly while you are in Forms Mode, reading the form with the Virtual Cursor may provide additional helpful information. Press ENTER to turn Forms Mode on and fill in a form field. Then press NUM PAD PLUS to exit Forms Mode and continue reading the form with the Virtual Cursor. About completing Adobe PDF forms Adobe PDF forms can be static or interactive. Static PDF forms must be printed in order to be filled in, while interactive PDF forms contain form fields you can fill in on-screen. A PDF form is made interactive if its creator sets up the document with appropriate form fields and properties in Adobe Designer, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Acrobat Content Server, or even Adobe® GoLive® CS. You can print a PDF form or export the form data to a separate file. Exporting form data allows you to save the existing data, or to transport it with an alternative method such as email. If you are filling out a PDF form from inside a web browser, you may be able to submit the form through the web. Completing Adobe PDF forms If a PDF form contains interactive form fields, you can fill in the form with the Basic toolbar's Hand tool. When you place the Hand tool pointer over an interactive form field, the pointer icon changes from the Hand icon to the Pointing Hand icon , the Pointing Hand Plus icon , the Arrow icon , or the I-beam icon . If the form fields aren't interactive, the Hand icon doesn't change; instead, you can print a noninteractive PDF form and fill it out by hand. Some text fields are dynamic, which means they automatically resize to accommodate the amount of data you enter, and can span across pages. (See About form fields that span multiple pages and About typing in forms with barcodes.) To fill out an interactive PDF form: 1. Select the Hand tool . 2. If you want to make form fields easier to identify in the PDF file, do any of the following in the Document Message Bar: l To display a light blue color in the background of all form fields, select Highlight Fields. l To display a red outline around all form fields that you're required to fill, select Highlight Required Fields. (This option appears only if the PDF form contains required fields.) 3. Position the pointer inside a form field, and click. The I-beam pointer allows you to type text; the Arrow icon lets you select an item in a list box; the Pointing Finger icon or the Pointing Hand Plus icon lets you select a button, a check box, a radio button, or an item from a list. 4. After entering text or making a selection, do any of the following: l Press Tab or Shift+Tab to accept the form field change and go to the next or previous field. l Press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS) to accept the text form field change and deselect the current field. If the current field is a check box, pressing Enter or Return turns the check box on or off. In a multiline text form field, pressing Enter or Return creates a paragraph return in the same form field. You can use Enter on the keypad to accept the change. l Press the Up or Left arrow key to select the previous radio button in a group of radio buttons, or press the Down or Right arrow key to select the next radio button. l Press Esc to reject the form field change and deselect the current form field. If you are in Full Screen mode, pressing Esc a second time causes you to exit Full Screen mode. 5. Once you have filled in the appropriate form fields, do one of the following: l Click the submit form button, if one exists. Clicking this button sends the form data to a database across the web or over your company intranet. l Choose File > Save As, and rename the file to save the form with the data you entered. l Export the form data. (See Exporting form data.) l Print the form. (See Printing Adobe PDF documents.) For information about how to fill in a digital signature form field, see Signing Adobe PDF documents. To clear a form in a browser: Do one of the following: l Select the reset form button, if one exists. You cannot undo this action. l Quit the browser, and start again. Clicking the web browser's Reload or Refresh button or the Go Back button, or following a link in a browser window, may not clear a form. To clear unsaved form entries in Acrobat: Choose File > Revert. Using Jaws version 8.0.423 and Adobe reader version 8.1. It will not work at all. Adobe Reader starts and when you tell it to start processing it stalls and doesn't come up with the document. I also have the demonstration version of Window Eyes version 6.1 which works pretty well. Once I get things started using WE I can switch to Jaws but when I get to an edit field an press enter Jaws says forms mode and lets me type in my last name but I can't get to the next field except to leave forms mode and arrow to the next form field and hit enter again but then it won't let me type in the field even though Jaws says forms mode. It says this is a secure document, is there some secret here?
