This is correct but I find that even if I have the data tables option
configured that I am still getting the information that a table exists
and then discover it is a table for formatting purposes. So what you are
seeking is to know how JAWS is trying to distinguish between the types
of tables and I do not know and hopefully someone on the list will be
able to tell us.

Robin,
Jaws does indeed distinguish between the 2 types of tables, albeit not
always correctly. There is a setting in the configuration manager for
whether you want Jaws to announce All Tables or only Data Tables.

Jaws does not distinguish between the two. It expects that the table is
for data and not formatting. So If I hit the letter T I will jump to a
table then I can use the table navigation keys to read the data. CLF and
W3C aa state that tables must not be used for formatting purposes.
