Hi Graham, another useful thing about Text aloud is that it'll convert pdf documents to text automatically. Another thing it'll do is to record documents as audio files.
It could be worth checking out. John.----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Page" <gpage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi John.Yes I wondered about Text Aloud. The problem this person has is that as theday goes on, her eyes become more painful and irritated. the question is whether or not Text loud would provide her with enough reading options. Still, it is definitely worth a try I think. From your description of her situation it sounds like just the thing. If she wants to try it there's a free trial. It's only 30 quid, and you can update for free. She can find it at http://www.nextup.com best of luck, John.----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Page" <gpage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 3:12 PM Subject: [jaws-uk] jaws and dry eyesHi all. I am trying to find a solution to a problem experienced by someone with over 50 percent vision in one eye though this person has problems with the liningof that eye causing her to experience increasing amounts of irritation and indeed pain as she uses her eyes. When she is tired she often experiencesperiods of blurred or cloudy vision when detailed print reading is difficult. screen magnification is not helpful to her. She currently has JAWS but finds that it speaks far too much. She tends to use the mouse a lot and JAWS tends to speak part of what is in focus whenshe tries to click on things. She would find speech useful when using theinternet, reading PDF or long word documents and when using email.I think that if her sight deteriates, JAWS could be useful so I would liketo get it to grow with her as her sight deteriorates or for when she is tired. I have set verbosity to advanced so that a minimum of jaws messages and infoabout controls is read. I have set screen echo to none so that she is notbombarded with info. This is useful when in file lists etc. if she does want this feature I have shown her how to change it so that, for example, messages will be read when scrolling through emails. This person is a real mouse head! she can type well but short cuts do not come naturally to her. Does JAWS have a facility where you can click on apiece of text with the mouse and have it read? My last query is about JAWS and Internet Explorer. JAWS will of course read lots of things using the virtual cursor but as far as I know, it gives a sighted person no hint at all visually about what part of the screen is being read. You can buy Magic to do this I know and it could be that Magic would be the better solution for her anyway. You can turn off virtual cursor I know but I believe you lose the ability to have parts of a web page spoken then. so, has anyone used JAWS in this situation? would Magic be a better solution even though magnification is not required? and though this lastpoint is not strictly JAWS related, is there really an all together bettersolution I should be considering?
