Yes Colin. That's the first thing to learn about Jaws... it is not anywhere near perfect and you have to adapt with work-arounds. As others have suggested, perhaps she should do as I now do, and leave the monitor turned off. I'm not sure whether she has solved the excess verbosity she had, but familiarity with Jaws should enable her to sort that out. That <control> key is a great asset here.

It is clear that Dorothy is struggling to do things visually. Thanks to the
many missing spaces, some sentences sound like a foreign language in
synthesised speech, but they probably look quite reasonable in large
characters on a big screen.

My advice to Dorothy would be to learn to work with speech and to rely on
her sight solely for things like tricky editing or reading foreign names or
mixed strings of letters and numbers. I'd absolutely hate not to have a
braille display, though these are just about the only jobs I would use it
for.

Stick at it Dorothy.

Colin

Tink,
an excellent post but might I suggest just one improvement. Since Dorothy
is having so much trouble writing emails it might be best for some one like
your self or others with similar experience of this problem to do tech
support by phone.

It's not what Operating system you use, it's how productive you are with it.

Dorothy,

Clearly this is getting us nowhere. This thread has turned into a
confusion which is trying both your patience and ours. So let's start
again.

The problem is that Jaws has difficulty interacting with Outlook and
Outlook Express, when the colour scheme is set to white on black. Other
people, including myself, have verified this.

What are the exact symptoms that you are getting? Is text repeated?
Is navigating around the body of an email difficult, or perhaps general
navigation within the application? Are menus behaving as expected, or are
they problematic too?

The next question is what has been done so far? Dorothy, you
forwarded an email suggesting that the custom highlights be changed. Have
you tried to do this? Did it improve things in any way?

What other measures have you tried? It is almost impossible to
suggest solutions to a problem, without knowing the full story.

What graphics card are you using in your computer? I don't think
this is part of the problem, as several people have experienced similar
problems, all with different hardware, but until we know we can't be sure.

What is your Jaws verbosity set to? What windows display settings
are you using, for example resolution, colour depth etc? What fonts does
Outlook Express use? Do you read and compose emails in HTML or Plain Text
mode?

Have you tried a slightly different combination to white on black?
Does white on dark grey affect the way Jaws behaves? If so how?

It may be that we can't solve this problem and that Jaws simply
cannot cope with this particular setup, in which case you may have to
consider a compromise.

In the meantime, let's leave off the quotations, cursing
professionally trained people, wasting time in airing grievances against
people both on and off this list and see if we can unravel the problem in
sensible fashion.

Tink.

Do not think I am being antagonistic . I come to bring information and
truth and if we are in the mood for quotes I have at time sat and wept
and
cried unto the Lord My God MyGod why hst thou hast forsakenme and almost
gone to the nearest lake taking self and computer. If I picked self up and
fought back then it was the only way out. If I got the Directors in
America
to take it was by recording the whole sorry tale not a no audio tape and
sending it by reg. post. I alsm had though a little trump card up my
sleeve which I will keep tomyself and a bit of arm twisting is what it
took to get the response. I am getting it out today and Darren if you
want
to kick me of the list then say so loud and clear and show your
credentials
please Ok The thing is sometimes you haveno alternative but to fight
back
or go under and somehow you find the strength not usre how.. Comes the
moment comes the man or the woman Ok Dorothy
