Hi Jamie, have you tried Media Player Classic? This is a media player with a
codec pack to play almost any audio/video formats out there including Real
media formats. MPC is a very friendly application to use with a simple
interface to match. It's a truly awesome application! However, it could be a
little confusing to install for people who are not very comfortable with
computers. This is not to scare anyone off but just a disclaimer as it were,
and in any case if one just accept the defaults through the installation
process they shouldn't run into any problems.

For this app to function properly though, the horrid Real Media Player
should be uninstalled from your computer first. This was the case when I
last checked so I stand corrected if anyone else has a more up to date
information on this.

For anyone using Jaws, note that Jaws keeps reading the status bar when MPC
is playing a media file. But this is a very simple issue to solve. Either
you- Maximise MPC (Alt Enter for full screen) and Jaws will go silent. Or,
in Jaws Config Manager for MPC set Screen Echo to none . That's- Config
Manager>Set Options>User Options>Screen Echo.

The version of MPC which I would recommend to use is the Mega version
(K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 5.90) because it includes support for Real Media
files (RM/RMVB). 5.90 is the latest release. There're five variants of the
MPC/K-lite Codec Pack which are basic, standard, full, mega and corporate.
You can read more about the differences between the five variants and
download the K-Lite mega Pack from the below links-

http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

I'm not a heavy media user on my computer, but I've been using MPC for quite
a long time now and I'm very happy with it. I love its simplicity, its clean
install/uninstall operation, the fact that it's neat and small and it
doesn't try to take over my computer like some other media players, and yet
to come across a media format that it can't play. I first got into it to
avoid Real Media Player but I use it for all my media purposes now.

Hope that is of some help.

Amro

Hi there,

Actually, it was only when I went to the download site that it dawned on me
that WMP is just Windows Media Player - dohhhh, what a twit I am!

My problem is that Windows Media Player doesn't play the DVD that I'm trying
to view as it says that it doesn't have the appropriate codecs. I was
trying to find a way of either getting the appropriate codecs for Windows
Media Player or getting another player programme that would have the codecs
included. Either way I wanted to do it as cheaply as possible.

Thanks and sorry for being thick! (Smile)

Jamie

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the information. Is WMP a free download or is there a cost?

Jamie,

Like you, I haven't had occasion to do this very often. But on the odd time
I have wanted to play a DVD I have found WMP does the job straight out of
the box. I've never been prompted to buy anything extra to make it work.

I wonder if there are version issues at play? I'm using version 11 of WMP,
on Windows Vista with Jaws 10.

I've only used WMP to play a DVD, I have no idea how to go about cutting
clips and all that fancy stuff.

Regards,

Ken
