Mmm, if too high a voltage or to high an ampage was allowed to be drawn by
the front USB sockets then unless there was a cable short to 5V or 12V it
must have come through the USB PCI card. As the rear ports are working I'd
be surprised if it was the PSU.

I suggest check the cable from the front sockets to the PCI USB card.

n.b. if it turns out to be the USB PCI card only a small number of cards are
supported by the OS, after a lot of time and money spent on incompatible
cards we now have some in stock.[1]

[1] They have three rear sockets and are therfore to tall for the X100 case.
