Hi Amy,

Thanks! Then that seems like the best way to go first, and if that
doesn't work, move to the next step.

ISA can be uninstalled and reinstalled including running the
config in about 20 minutes. The repair option works too.

Is it possible to uninstall and reinstall just the ISA firewall
component on SBS? If so, that's definitely the way to go. Is the
"repair" option available and viable in an SBS install?

I would think that the restore done by the owner would
have blown up in his face, routing tables, lat, ip addresses, networks
and network rule configurations, certs, etc would be so different the
restore should have failed. I would agree that you are not getting the
whole story. You should be able to uninstall ISA reinstall ISA and
restore from your original config, shouldn't take to long.

                        OK.

I am now on site looking at the server, and the
server is one sick little monster.

There are 2 issues apparent at the moment, when
I am trying to restore the original saved config file I have, the
progress bar gets about 1/2 way and stops, even after 30 minutes it did
not move, even allowing for how s -- l -- o -- w the server is running,
I don't think this is going to work.

If I try to alter any of the firwall rules, add
a new one, change an existing one, delete an existing one, to change / /
delete part works, when I click apply, again the progress bar goes about
1/2 way and stops.

Does anyone have a feel for if the restore of a
foreign ISA config file should make the server run so slow, network
stuff I can understand, but could this be expected to make the server
itself so slow ? I just feel that I still might not have the whole
story, but I can see anything else obvious that has been tampered with,
or installed.

Similarly, the SBS wizzard also hangs after
you've answer all the questions.

Any suggestions anyone, short of uninstalling
and reinstalling ?

How many extra rules does an ISA server on an
SBS box need? Usually they don't have any. Sometimes 1-5. Ok, you got
me. It might take 30 minutes if you're a slow typer.

Does that 20 mins include manually re adding the

Great story. You are going to make a lot of
money from this client. He'll never again do anything without calling
you first.

Use the restore. Worst comes to worst you can
reinstall ISA. It takes what, 20 minutes to install and run the CEIW?

                        Hi,

At the urgent request of the owner of the
business, I will be attending a site in the morning, with a parcular
problem created by the unknowing trying to do what they should not have.

It a small business, 5 users running a recently
installed SBS2003 Premium SP1 on a HP 1100 server.

In an attempt to get inbound VPN working,
instead of calling me, the business owner tried to save a few bucks and
has resotred an ISA server config backup file he obtained from one of
his friends at the chamber of comerce taken off of his SBS server. He
friend told him, "We have that working, just restore this config file,
flick this setting and it will be working.

Other than it exists I know nothing of the other
SBS server.

Fortunately he owned up to what he did, so I at
least have a straight up and down view of the problem, and know whats
happened.

Not too supprisingly, now he can not access the
server from the network, the LAN PC's are not even getting DHCP
addresses, and external e-mail is down, the server no longer is
answering on port 25 from the internet. If he logs on to the console,
says it's very very slow. He timed it at 20 minutes before the desktop
icons appeared So it seems pretty sick.

I've done a technet & web search and there is no
mention of such acts, it's probably not a too frequent occurance
(thankfully !)

Does anyone have any experience with a similar
thing ?

Before turning up in the morning, I'd like to
have some feeling for if the server is recoverable, or if it's likely to
need a full rebuild ?

I do have a copy of the ISA config from when the
server was installed about 3 months ago, does anyone have any feeling
for if simply resotring this wil put everything straight ?

Thanks in advance for any works of wisdom.

                        Regards

                        Glenn
