Colin,

A couple of things about WINS.

Peter is correct that Windows 2000 machines do not need WINS. However, legacy
clients such as Win9x or even Unix/Linux may need to have NetBIOS name
recognition of machine names.

Native mode in Windows 2000 means that only Windows 2000 domain controllers are
present, you can still have NT 4.0 workstations, NT 4.0 member servers and
win9x workstations. Thus WINS may be necessary on a Windows 2000 network (even
in native mode).

However, the location of the WINS server is important. Avoid running it on a
multihomed machine, WINS has many documented issues when it is installed an a
server with more than one NIC. Also, I avoid installing WINS on the ISA box
(the majority of ISA machines are multihomed so this is a good reason to avoid
this situation). As WINS is normally used only in networks with multiple
subnets, if possible, put the WINS box on the segregated subnet.

In summary, if you don't need WINS uninstall it. If you do need WINS, put it on
a box other than the ISA box.

HTH

Be careful. Legacy clients might still need it.

If you have active directory and dns installed you don't need or want WINS.
Furthermore, if you haven't even configured it and are using a native mode
network it is just sitting there doing nothing (except causing trouble).
Uninstall it!
