Yes, it is true that you need to be careful.

First of all, you should go in blocks of 8, not 10. Remember, computers know
binary. Second, if you go too low, like Greg said, it can break things. For
example, an MTU size limited to no more than 1416 will break a Sonicwall VPN
using IPSec and pre-shared secret where one end is the Sonicwall VPN client.

Be careful of these things. I know they sound like a fix for crap speeds,
they can be in general, however you may come across times and apps you are
trying to put thru your isa server that don't work as well as they should or
as reliable or fast as you would think. This can sometimes be a result of
tweaking the mtu sizes. Ive seen it before in a few cases.

I know John Tolmachoff had some info on a similar topic iirc.

Sorry for the delay on this topic.

There is a great article at http://www.techrepublic.com called TWEAK Win2k
Server registry to improve TCP/IP Performance. Use the search command to
find it. If you have any trouble, reply to this post and I'll send you the
exact URL. It is also useful for slow/low speed connections.

As an example: ping -f -l <MTUSIZE> <gateway> will tell you if you have the
optimum MTU size. Add or decrease the size by 10 until it tells you you're
fragmenting the packets. I started with 1576 and finally hit upon 1472 as
optimum.

I used it and worked very well.
