Hi folks! I agree Jo, that we should voice our displeasure at this decision. Maybe a flood of emails will have an effect. All it can do though, is appeal to their idealism. That's if they have any. From an economic point of view, there are not enough of us to seriously threaten their benchmark number of listeners. Rather than protesting harshly, we should emphasize how much Audioscope means to us and in what way it has been useful to us in the past. To be honest though, I have little hope of succeeding. They'll have planned something to fill that slot and probably started producing for it. On the other hand, since Audioscope is off for the summer anyway, they wouldn't loose face if they reversed their decision, as the replacement show hasn't started. No one would know. Meanwhile, I can only invite those who dread the void left by Audioscope to subscribe to Talk Around. We are always striving to royally entertain our listeners and present a wide range of blind issues in a stylish format. Juli 2006 13:42 To: irelandvipnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [IrelandVIPNews] audioscope axed hello friends, many of you i am sure will be as surprised as i was to learn that RTE have decided to discontinue the series "audioscope" over thirty years ago blind people lobbied RTE for a programme specifically to cater for the needs of blind and vision impaired people, after much pressure RTE agreed to have a twenty minute programme on sunday evenings however they would not permit a blind person to present the programme jim sherwin was the presenter, and the producer was dearmuid peevoy, the programme was at that time entitled"listen and see". apart from being really useful to blind and vision impaired people, the programme became a vehicle for public awareness of blindness and blind issues. during the past thirty two years the programme naturally enough has gone through a number of changes, the main one being that the programme was eventually presented by a blind or vision impaired presenter , and the name was changed to "audioscope" . over the years the programme has had it's critics, [and i include myself in that] but no matt er what, there is still a need for such a programme, but apparently RTE feel differently, i'm expressing a personal view here friends, we blind people need to get information, advice, and support, there is no other programme on RTE at the moment that can fulfil that need, people with other disabilities can get their information from newspapers and periodicals, the majority of blind and vision impaired people depend on radio for information. according to statistics ireland's popylation will age drastically over the next ten years or so, and we all are aware that with the onset of the aging process there comes an increase in eye related problems, resulting in more and more people with a need for audio information, so surely this increases the need for programmes such as "audioscope what i intend to do, and i hope as many blind and vision impaired people who feel as strongly as i do about this, is to contact RTE and voice my strong opposition to the removal of audioscope, phone RTE on 01 2083111,and ask to be put through to the information office, or e mail radio1@xxxxxx and remember also friends, we did this before with the audible signals situation, people are making decisions on matters that concern us, without taking on board our feelings on the matter. sorry to have gone on so long on this matter, but i really feel very strongly about it, i am endeavouring to get in touch with ana leddy, head of radio one to discuss it with her, but up to now, no joy, but i don't give up easily, i'm not normally a militant person, but this decision has really bugged me, travel safely, joe bollard. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
