I did not check my mail for a few days and what do i find, RPM/APT,
KDE/GNOME, ..
This is also not anyway close to a distrowar as a few noted, it is an
expression of likin. If u like a girl/boy, it does not imply that even your
best friend should. So dont get worked up about such mails. they are worth a
read, and everything that is attributed to any software on the web should be
taken with a pinch of salt.
Linus likes KDE , fine, let him. But as one GENIUS (sarcasm implied!) gnome
does not suck, nor does kde rock. If u like fancy colors and hundreds of
apps bundled, use kde. Gnome is more basic, but i find gnome loads faster,
and compiles faster in the gentoo install. So i prefer gnome. Anyone can
download the kde apps. kde apps are mostly just the graphical cover up of
command line commands. After an Arch install I was stuck with command line
for a week. But i fell in love with it. So i got a DE(gnome in my case) to
use flash and java plugins. I am still not out of the command line habit and
am sending this mail through links.
Now about package managers. None is perfect for me, because perfect as
everything here is relative.
I recently have tried,
fedora5,
ubuntu dapper,
Underground desktop,
Arch Linux,(liked it but pacman kept giving errors)
Linux from Scratch(not successful)
Gentoo.
Soon I analysed the pros and cons of each,
I am going to keep changing distros till i find one. Any different distro,
please recommend. Also is slackware really good or is its installer putting
users, away,(i'll download the iso if one recommends with a reason).
Please excuse any contradictions between the first and last parts of my
mail. the first is my opinion, the last my request!
