The initiative from Madras University seems good,
aditya. I just wanted to share my thoughts. I did my
M.S in U.S.
From what I have seen there, most of the computer
science departments of universities do their
programming under some flavor of unix. They tend to
start teaching programming like c with windows
environment in Bachelors initially and at later time
in bachelors, shift them to unix environment.
My university recently switched to Linux from Solaris.
If I am not mistaken, C programming in Unix
environment is more powerful than in Win environment.
If I am not mistaken, its because of Unix being
written in C thereby presenting more flexibility and
also options to use the OS at deeper levels. I would
appreciate any thoughts, additional information in
In this context, Unix environment would be a much
better tool for learning C programming. Also not to
mention the possibility of playing with the kernel or
the OS as the source code is available. Network
programming in C on unix is quite good too. U get to
learn the grassroots.
You might want to share these thoughts with your
faculty. Talk to somebody who is close to you and open
to ideas. find out their requirements and post it
we will also benefit from discussion of the various
software available and their pros and cons.
