I never thought this was an issue but after this discussion I checked
the list I frequesnt now (ofbiz.org) and found it was all top-posts
there! And the discussions there are far from inactive!

You refer to some other mailing list and trying to transpose the rules to
this list!
No, that just makes it even worse.
Not everyone has GMail and not everyone can refer to old mails just to
follow a discussion.
Imagine a thread with more than 100 posts.Do you want a person to refer to
100 mails just to find out who has posted what, on a particular topic.
Ok, disk space is getting cheaper but surely the strategy you suggest
is a guzzler. I dont suggest that everyone starts using GMail but
surely other mail clients should start giving this functionality! Or
does this feature depend on Google's search might!

It is not only that everybody does not have Gmail, but many pepole have mail
clients wich follow the threaded architecture (I don't). For them, it will
be a real irrritant.
And you are asking this functionality to be provided in a mail client, that
people having Gmail need not bother, so on so forth, but fellow listers
point out about top posting, but that small step to be avoided is so
difficult for you !

There is no specific "ilugc list-ettiquette", we just follow rules that
have been laid down to make e-mail easier to read.
By list-ettiquette am suggesting that the rules are not just 'laid'
down but also linked to on the website so all can read.
