Prior to 16.0, the Allegro long name feature was in earlier adopter mode and supported by setting the env variable, allegro_long_package_name. With this variable names up to 255 chars were supported. Each release added more name types that supported the additional length and I believe by the 15.7 longer padstack names were supported (although padstacks might have been added in an earlier release). In the 15.x releases, you must always have this variable set when using a board

with longer names.

As of 16.0, the longer names were productized. The variable, allegro_long_name_size = <value> seeds new boards with its initial name limit. Via the Setup->Design Parameters dialog you can change this limit to a larger value. Once a board has been seeded with a longer length, it will maintain this longer length even when it is opened by a user that does not have any env variables set.

Deac,
I took a look a sourcelink, and found that 15.x versions
support up to eighteen (18) characters and 16.x versions
support up to thirty (30) characters on a standard
installation.
Note: The Total number of characters includes the dot
and extension. So the useable padstack file name
length is only fourteen (14) characters.

We've done up to 18 characters without any problems...

Dharma,
We found out (by mistake) that padstacks with long file
names could be created using SKILL, but could not be
        re-opened or edited manually later.

We eventually had to limit padstack names to fourteen (14)
characters in order to be fully compatible with Allegro.

How did your customer originally create the padstacks?

Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Long files names in allegro

Hi Everyone,
We have run into a problem with long file names in 15.5. We have a
customer
who uses very long files names for their padstacks. Previously we were
able
to add these with no problem ( may have been using an expert license at
the
time) but now we get a "file name too long" error. Is there a switch in
preferences, Or elsewhere, that I am missing that will allow us to use
long
file names?
Thanks in advance and I wish you all a Happy New Year!, Dharma
