Hey,

as documented in the Users-Guide, you can change the default split
orientation to vertical, see http://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html Section 4.6

If you have two horizontally split windows and set the split for each
window to vertical, you should get the behaviour you explained for
opening and moving windows.
