Mike, she sent around a picture of it this morning. The insert says
Frank
Pachmayr on it, and it looks to be made out of a hard rubber material.

Not Pachmyer, Tyler mfg and distribution. Made from aluminum or
bronze

What he said.
What's the Pachmayr insert made of, plastic, rubber or metal?

Not likely as it is not part of the original gun

Yes, indeed, a nice looking specimen. Given the dates and the lack of
an
under barrel ejection rod shroud, this one would be a 1st generation
Dick
Special. I believe the other differences in the various generations
(mine
is a 3rd generation) comes mostly in the hammer design. It's got nice
looking bluing and the wood grips look very clean as well. The
Pachmayr
grip insert is an add-on, of course, which some people liked for Colt
and
S&W snubbies to fill out the grip a bit. Given the prices I've seen
lately
for Dick Specials I'd place it around $700 - $800.

Easy Erich.
A friends' 1938 dick special, was his father's. I've never seen what
looks
to be a
Pachmeyer grip extension in front of the wood grips? Comments?
