Further testing over the last few days seem to suggest my problem is
related to the 2.6.28.14 Linux kernel. Reverting to the original Ubuntu
9.04 linux kernel version 2.6.28.11 I have experienced no hard lockup for
24 hours now.

If problems persist, I may just install another video card and disable the
onboard nVidia 8200.

Some of the problems with the nVidia driver are related to recent Linux
kernel changes and changes to Xorg. This months Distrowatch Weekly has a
good article concerning some of these same issues as they relate to Intel
video chipsets.

FYI, I was able to fix the Ubuntu 9.04 and nVidia 8200 lock-ups by updating the nVidia driver from this repo:
