Unfortunately the way the build system adds the vmdk header, this won't work. I have had success converting the raw images to vmdk using qemu-img and producing the result you're seeking. Ultimately, I'm not sure that "testing images" provided by the build factory should necessarily have tons of free space on them by default. Perhaps you will find what you want with the Haikuware Super Pack?
