Then maybe a sort of "quick start" that would contain info on how to run an application, set up networking, search things on the web, install something and turn off the computer?

of Applications and Preferences etc. after Tracker and Deskbar.
Normally, users dread scrolling and probably won't ever make it to the
end of the apps list...

The other chapters before Applications and Preferences etc. are
relatively short in terms of the space they take on the contents page.
Therfore they are quicker to scroll by to reach the referential parts.

That's to also keep in mind: We're talking about the contents page of
the user guide. It's not like the user cannot jump right to a chapter
from there and would have to scroll through pages and pages.
