Hi!
I'd move "Applications" and "Preferences" higher, perhaps even after
Tracker and Deskbar? HaikuDepot, Networ preferences and WebPositive are
probably more important to users than filesystem queries or checking
processor/memory usage.
cheers

Hello there!
PulkoMandy opened ticket #16192 [1] on reordering the different sections
of the user guide.
The most crucial topics for new users should come first, I suppose in an
effort to compensate for the diminishing attention span of people. :)
I'd like to move the discussion from that ticket to this ML to give the
issue a wider audience. Not least of all, because I got pretty used to
the current ordering over the years...
Here's my first shot at it:
Boot Loader
Haiku's GUI
Tracker
Deskbar
Workspaces
Twitcher
Team Monitor
Shortcuts and key combinations
Queries
Filetypes
Attributes
Index
Applications
Desktop Applets
Preferences
Filesystem layout
Workshop: Filetypes, Attributes, Index and Queries
Workshop: Managing Email
Workshop: Wireless networking
Bash and Scripting
I kept the Boot Loader first, as that may be the first thing a user
needs when things go wrong. Then come the most useful topics dealing
with everyday usage if the system (from GUI to Queries). Followed by the
underlying features/principles (Filetypes to Index), ending with the
more referencial list of Apps/Prefs/etc. and Workshops.
It's not completely arbitrary how it was ordered before, e.g. the
Filetypes->Attributes->Index->Queries was logically in the rigt order,
but I see how Queries are more important for everyone who wants to find
their files and don't so much care about the fundamentals underneath.

Humdinger
