Personally, I find it causes many more issues than it solves.
It's pretty simple to add every optional package to a single line, and
forces the tester to actually understand what they are.
Having the variable there makes it too easy for people who don't know
what they're doing to accidentally install packages that cause
problems - such as OpenSound, etc.
