Such a mechanism needs to be there, anyway, though :-)

That thought also crossed my mind some time ago, and I would say the 
index_server would be the natural home for that kind of functionality 
(unlike the registrar).

Why not? I frequently search for some identifier over a codebase; there 
is definitely a use for grok, especially without Eclipse and Java :-)
