Regarding metadata extraction tools:

A future (GPL) addon could also take profit of GNU's libextractor:
http://www.gnu.org/software/libextractor/
Which lead quickly to the issue of concurrent add-ons fighting to
analyze the same entry_ref.
I didn't look into the current implementation, but is it already handled?
