FWIW, I've always liked Shift for horizontal scrolling as well -
Google Chrome does this on web pages by default, and when I used to
use the Logitech software that came with my mouse on Windows, it
enabled horizontal scrolling via shift key as well.

At some point, I'm pretty certain Firefox also supported this feature,
but they have replaced the default shift+scroll behavior to go
forward/backward through the browser history (which drives me
absolutely bonkers!). Apparently it's configurable still, but I'm too
lazy to figure out how.
