When I was with OPCYC, they used to alternate the 'committee boat' for the
start, then that boat would start as soon as it could after it set the finish
pin and the fleet crossed. Finishes were on the honor system just as we
currently do. It at least let all of the boats get out and sail. But after
being committee boat, I think having everyone on the honor system and starting
at the same time really works just as well.

My new boat (S2 27) is at Belle Isle for now but we will likely be back at
Leeward by mid-October.
John I think your other ideas sound really cool,  and maybe even a point to
point race thrown in there might be interesting also.

Maybe we should try to do fewer races but treat them a bit
more seriously:

(1)  Schedule a spring series and a fall series (five
races each).
(2)  Have races on Sunday, starting around
eleven.
(3)  Vary courses a bit.  - pick more gov't marks
and establish a few predefined courses.
(4)  Move Starting area to middle of
river.
(5)  Have a committee boat - take turns volunteering -
committee boat gets one point for that day
(6)  Score as a series and have awards use low point
scoring as per Racing Rules of Sailing
(7)  Charge a nominal fee to cover
awards
(8)  Allow one throw-out (awards based on best four
finishes)

(9)  Let's keep Pagan River Challenge with WYCC as
co-sponsor (if WYCC is game).

I'd be happy to conduct a review of racing rules as well
as a review of how to committee.  Will continue as
scorekeeper/webmaster.  If we set this up and schedule around other
activities, I could get my boat up the river for most races.

I'd be happy to host a meeting of volunteers who would like to
work on "taking it up a notch".

Please share opinions/thoughts.  I'd be happy to host a
meeting of volunteers who would like to work on "taking it up a
notch".

John

Subject: [gpsbug] WSSC Fall 2011 ad Hoc
Race Series

Fall is upon us so let's go racing!

For the Fall we'd like to do whatever  we can to maximize
the number of racers. The Spring Series had generated a lot of advance interest
and optimism, but in the event, disappointingly, we didn't see many boats on
the
line. In part, probably a case of life happening as we went about our plans.

What can be done to maximize the number of boats on the
starting line? Different start times? Different days? Other locations for the
start? Some racing/ racing rules familiarization? What can be done to enable
you
to race?

Anyone, everyone please chime in. What works for
you?

As a minimum, please feed back whether you'd prefer to race on
Saturday or Sunday and AM or PM.

Also, please provide any other germane feedback so we can
include as many boats as possible. We just go out to have fun on the water! No
protests!

Let's plan to start racing the last weekend in September and
finish up before Thanksgiving. (Please pass this along to anyone else who might
be interested in racing.)

Thanks,
Steve
