Yeah that's what I was thinking but I guess a dumb question since I presume
that none of the compatible receivers can take an external antenna.

I don't think he was refering to the stationary amplifiers you described,
but the portible ones (probably better described as
pre-amplifiers) that sit between the antena and the receiver.

I don't know anything about their effectiveness, especially indoors, but
perhaps you do?
