Dear Ernesto,
Nuclear weapons have changed both our mentality and our thinking in
relation to war and the existence of human life on our planet. Their use
will make our planet a designated place of mass death, a planetary
cemetery.
Never before has the human race found itself in this terrible possibility
of total destruction. The existence of nuclear weapons degrades us to the
level of the beast.
When you know you are going to die in vain, you have the right and you have
to think about reacting to be saved, unless you have decided to commit
suicide.
Our common enemy, the existing future nuclear war must awaken us and with a
sense of responsibility to all living beings on our planet, we must all
unite to face this enormous threat as brothers.
The threat of using nuclear weapons against humans is unacceptable, is not
in line with the ethics of Science, of dignity, of spirituality, of respect
for the lives of people, animals, plants.
On my opinion only the Democracy of ancient Athens can save us, since it
removes power from the rulers.

Putin's declaration, putting Russia's nuclear forces on alert, is the
clearest demonstration that the mere existence of nuclear weapons is a
danger to life on planet Earth. It is the best demonstration that atomic
weapons are not a guarantee to avoid wars through deterrence. Deterrence is
a lie, since there can always be an irresponsible irrational being with the
power to use that genocidal power. I am not saying that Putin is, but there
are too many examples in history of rulers with these characteristics, from
Nero to Hitler.

*Russia has a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons, but what does putting them
on 'high alert' mean?*
Not since the Cold War have nuclear weapons been used as a serious threat
in a conflict between major powers. Now, Russian President Vladimir Putin
has once again invoked the spectre of nuclear war by declaring on Russian
television that Russian nuclear deterrent forces are on "high alert". While
it's not entirely clear what Mr Putin means by that, Moscow has previously
revealed its official policy on the use of nuclear weapons. And with
Russia's vast arsenal of warheads and nuclear-capable
Mr Putin told his Defence Minister and the chief of the military’s general
staff to put Russia's nuclear forces in a "special regime of combat duty".
A senior US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said
Washington was trying to assess what that meant in tangible terms.
But Mr Putin was "potentially putting in play forces that, if there's a
miscalculation, could make things much, much more dangerous," the official
added.
For some, the message was clear.
"This is not 'deterrence' on Putin's part — this is a threat," said
Patricia Lewis, director of the Chatham House think tank's international
security program.

The United States and Ukraine say they will not back down even as Vladimir
Putin says he has placed Russia's nuclear forces on high alert.
Miro Popkhadze, an analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, told
Al Jazeera Mr Putin's announcement was meant to be perceived as a threat by

"His objective is to divide the European Union" and weaken the bloc's
support for Ukraine, he said. "It is unlikely [this will work]."
Russia and the United States typically have the land and submarine-based
segments of their strategic nuclear forces on alert and prepared for combat
at all times, but nuclear-capable bombers and other aircraft are not.
If Mr Putin was arming or otherwise raising the nuclear combat readiness
of his bombers, or if he was ordering more ballistic missile submarines to
sea, then the US might feel compelled to respond in kind, according to Hans
Kristensen, a nuclear analyst at the Federation of American Scientists.
That would mark a worrisome escalation, he said.
