This is more of a preference type question I think. I like the city navigator maps for routing me to/through unknown areas, like St. Chuck. On a caching trip in another city, the autorouting is great! But, since you have the Garmin Quest, you can use that to get you near the cache, and just use the GPS for the "goto" to the cache.

If that's the case, then the topo's would give you what you need. Buy a 2 gig MicroSD card (about $20-25) and you can load the topos and ALL of City Navigator on the card. Only problem with the topos is that they all won't fit on the card because the limit is based on 2025 map segments. Since the topos have much smaller segments, you will exceed the 2025 limit before loading all the topos. One work-around is buy 2 or 3 1 gig cards and load areas of the topos onto each card.

I've got a Nuvi for street routing but I still like using my GPS for routing if I'm caching around town and not making a caching trip out of town.

Thanks so much to all of you for helping. I had loaded onto two Garmins before in 2007 with a coupon and wrongly assumed the same would work for the CSx. Too bad some other company doesn't have maps for sale. Garmin needs some competition. I was not trying to beat the system....just understand it.

So I am in the market for a map program. What is the best one for caching? Especially in strange cities and countryside. Don't need any mountain scapes just yet :-)

Thanks again, guys. You really helped.

Libby

Version 7 and earlier had 2 unlock codes but starting with ver 8 and then ver 2008 you only get 1 unlock code. It's kind of confusing because Ver 8 was really 2007 maps and then they changed it to Ver 2008 for the 2008 maps.

I thought tho that you could install the maps on 2 devices with the one unlock code.

Jeff is right. The Trip and Waypoint manager is not locked and contains no maps. It is meant to transfer WP's, routes, and tracks between mapsource and the GPS (both ways). Mapsource is the program that handles the interface between the GPS and also any maps, such as City Navigator. The older versions of the maps were called Metroguide. That is why you can update mapsource free but the maps aren't updated unless you buy an updated set of maps. They normally come out once a year in August.

The current City Navigator maps only have 1 unlock code, and it's assigned to your Quest, so you can't put in another unlock code and load the maps on a different GPS. I think Garmin will sell you an additional unlock code over the phone but it's about the same price as just buying another copy, or about $100-125.

I don't know how you're going to get around that problem cheaply because the unlock code(s) and GPS serial numbers are registered on Garmin's website so it seems impossible to beat the system.
