It should be noted (and Mike or Tom can probably confirm this) that
steps 4-6 will probably work on a Slackware based system no problem.
The commands above look alien to me as a Slacker. Rather than build
an .rpm or .deb, look for a script or command to build .tgz
(Slackware package). If there is no .tgz build, then grab source
code. Then download and install checkinstall if it isn't already on
the hard drive.
Here's the usual drill to compile source code in Slack/VL.
./configure (there may be config options to deal with)
make
make test
checkinstall (as root)
Checkinstall askes if you want to output .rpm, .deb or .tgz. Choose
.tgz. Sometimes checkinstall actually installs the .tgz package --
sometimes, it doesn't. If it doesn't, you have a number of choices.
Built into Slack is installpkg. There is also Swaret (what I use for
package management) and Slackpkg.
If you aren't accustomed to compiling source code and creating and
installing Slack packages, I should run through it with you at lab.
