When JohnB and I worked on his grant app to LaPorte County United Way, we leaned heavily on the Community Technology Centers Network (CTCNet) web site. CTCNet lists the Urban League of South Bend as a member. There is also a Boy and Girls Club in Valpo, a few blocks from John, which is also a member. I called the South Bend contact, Keith Blanchard, thinking he worked for the Urban League as listed. However the phone number is the South Bend Housing Authority (SBHA). Keith was out sick. I spoke briefly to Steve Peterson, an administrator at SBHA. Steve told me that SBHA received an AOL "PowerUp" grant in partnership with the Urban League. Steve is the SBHA grant writer (hoorah!!). The grant was for a bunch of Gateway computers and Microsoft software. The SBHA has three computer labs and two staff geeks. I gave Steve the 15-second executive summary of FreeGeek. I asked to visit their labs and invited their staff to visit our demo lab. Steve said he is eager to work with us in "any way" he can. He asked me to follow up next week. Hhmm...grant writer...three labs...
