Those OSX notes in INSTALL can go away. Apple now uses clang instead of GCC - wikipedia says "Apple chose to develop a new compiler front end from scratch, supporting C, Objective-C and C++.[17] This "clang" project was open-sourced in July 2007"

The OSX notes in INSTALL should say something about installing the prerequisite packages. I suggest just linking to the wiki page -
