Those OSX notes in INSTALL can go away. Apple now uses clang instead of
GCC - wikipedia says "Apple chose to develop a new compiler front end
from scratch, supporting C, Objective-C and C++.[17] This "clang"
project was open-sourced in July 2007"
The OSX notes in INSTALL should say something about installing the
prerequisite packages. I suggest just linking to the wiki page -
https://freeciv.fandom.com/wiki/Install-MacOSX

Thanks, this did the trick, didn't need to do the other export's.
Great! Thanks for reporting back.
We should be able to improve the configure error message to give a
hint about the solution, and to add a Mac specific note to INSTALL.

Are the other OSX notes in INSTALL still relevant? They have been
there close to twenty years (since summer 2001) without anybody
revisiting them.
